Kópavogur celebrates 70th anniversary amid major road infrastructure projects

The municipality of Kópavogur is marking its 70th anniversary, celebrating a year of significant milestones. Key events included celebrations for 70-year-old residents, a child-friendly municipality symposium, and the relocation of the Color Run to the town. The municipality also celebrated receiving town rights on May 11, marked by a visit from the President of Iceland.

In infrastructure developments, a major road project is underway to shorten the Ring Road by 12 km. The extensive construction involves laying 19 km of highway, 9 km of side roads, and building four double-lane bridges totaling 468 meters in length.

According to Aron Örn Karlsson, site manager at Ístak, the project has seen significant scaling, with the workforce doubling between late 2023 and late 2024 during peak bridge construction. The team successfully completed all bridge concrete work before the winter of 2024 to avoid difficult weather conditions. Current efforts are focused on roadbed preparation, erosion protection, and laying the base layer.
