Kópavogur preschool model shows improved staffing and stability

The municipality of Kópavogur is evaluating the results of its new preschool model, implemented last autumn to address staffing shortages and improve service stability for families. The initiative includes providing six hours of free preschool care and increased flexibility regarding children's stay durations.

Six months into the program, data indicates that no preschools have had to close due to staffing issues, a significant change from the previous school year which saw 212 closure days. Most facilities are now fully staffed, and more children are receiving placements.

Additionally, 46% of parents have opted for shorter stay durations, with the average stay decreasing from 8.1 to 7.5 hours. Officials report that these shorter durations have reduced stress and stimulation for both children and staff, creating a calmer environment. While the municipality acknowledged initial criticism from parents regarding the need to adapt to these systemic changes, the current assessment suggests improved well-being for the children.
