Indonesia: KPK detains Customs official and PPATK budget increases
Indonesia is seeing significant developments in anti-corruption and financial intelligence efforts. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained Gatot Heroe Hernanda, a former head of the Kediri Customs and Excise Office, as a new suspect in a bribery investigation involving the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. During the investigation, the KPK seized three luxury motorcycles—a BMW R Nine T Scrambler, a Kawasaki Z900RS, and a Triumph Bonneville—along with approximately Rp2.8 billion in foreign currency. Investigators suspect these assets were purchased using special operational funds and later replaced by gifts from the private sector.
In a separate move to strengthen financial oversight, President Prabowo Subianto has increased the budget for the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) by over 100 percent. The agency has proposed a total budget of Rp769.8 billion for 2027 to enhance its capacity in combating money laundering, terrorism financing, and online gambling. PPATK reports that online gambling fund turnover was approximately Rp359.81 trillion in 2024. Additionally, PPATK data indicates that corruption-related transactions in Indonesia reached approximately Rp195.77 trillion between 2025 and the first half of 2026.
