Indonesia President orders investigation into forest fires and BNPB corruption

President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a massive investigation into forest and land fires (karhutla), labeling intentional burning as ‘environmental terrorism’ and a crime against humanity. The President instructed the police, attorney general, Ministry of Forestry, TNI, and intelligence agencies to investigate corporate involvement. Consequently, the Ministry of Forestry has suspended six companies in Central Kalimantan for their roles in the fires.

Separately, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating the misuse of disaster preparedness funds at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). The KPK has named five suspects, including Bima Setiawan, a former expert for the BNPB and brother of former BNPB Head Letjen TNI Suharyanto. Investigators are also looking into potential involvement of two active TNI members and have coordinated with the TNI Military Police (Puspom TNI).

In related seizures, the KPK has confiscated assets worth Rp5.47 billion, including cash in USD and SGD, gold, and cryptocurrency, as part of the BNPB probe. The investigation also explores potential conflicts of interest regarding companies allegedly affiliated with the wife of one of the suspects.
