KPU officials face scrutiny over controversial election regulation clause

Former General Elections Commission (KPU) commissioner Hadar Nafiz Gumai and former Chairman of Commission II of the DPR, Ahmad Doli Kurnia, have raised concerns regarding Article 18, paragraph (3) of KPU Regulation (PKPU) Number 19 of 2023.

Gumai stated that the specific provision, which is linked to the 2024 presidential candidacy of Gibran Rakabuming Raka, was not present in early drafts or during public testing in September 2023. He noted that the clause appeared to emerge during the harmonization process at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights without transparent discussion with the public or the DPR.

Ahmad Doli Kurnia has called on the KPU to explain why this article, being referred to as a ‘smuggled clause,’ was not presented during hearings with Commission II of the DPR. The controversy centers on the regulation's accommodation of specific educational qualifications for candidates.
