KPU Pasuruan studies electoral district reorganization for 2029
The General Elections Commission (KPU) of Pasuruan Regency has begun studying a potential reorganization of electoral district (dapil) boundaries for the 2029 legislative elections. This internal review is prompted by significant voter growth in several sub-districts, which may render current district compositions and seat allocations disproportionate to the actual population.
KPU Pasuruan Chairman Ainul Yaqin stated that seat allocation must remain proportional to population size to ensure the principle of equal voting value. The commission noted that any changes would involve coordination with local government, political parties, and public testing to ensure transparency.
On a broader national scale, discussions regarding the restructuring of electoral districts and the addition of parliamentary seats are gaining momentum. While some advocate for splitting large districts to improve representation, there are concerns that such changes could act as a de facto threshold for political competition. Legal precedents, including a 2022 Constitutional Court ruling, emphasize that the design of electoral districts should be the domain of election organizers rather than being fixed within legislative appendices.
