Orthodox Christians celebrate Mala Gospojina holiday

Orthodox Christians across the Balkans and Moldova are celebrating Mala Gospojina, the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. This major religious holiday commemorates the birth of the Virgin Mary to her elderly parents, Joachim and Anne, in Nazareth.

In Macedonia, festivities included a religious procession (litia) through the center of Skopje featuring the icon of the Three-Handed Virgin. In various regions, the day is marked by divine liturgies, community gatherings, and traditional fairs. The holiday is considered the first major feast of the new liturgical year.

Beyond religious services, the day is steeped in folk traditions. It is often viewed as a transition from summer to autumn, marking the end of field work and the beginning of the harvest season. Many families celebrate it as a 'slava' (patron saint day). Folk beliefs suggest the day is a time for peace, avoiding heavy domestic chores, and praying for fertility and safe childbirth, as the Virgin Mary is regarded as a protector of mothers.
