Kraken and Saab UK unveil autonomous USV for aerial threat detection
Kraken Technology Group and Saab UK have unveiled a prototype autonomous unmanned surface vehicle (USV) designed to detect and track aerial threats. The system integrates the K3 SCOUT USV platform with Saab’s lightweight Giraffe 1X 3D radar.
Following sea trials in the United Kingdom on October 5, the system demonstrated its ability to provide early warning for vessels, port facilities, offshore energy assets, and critical national infrastructure. The Giraffe 1X radar is specifically designed to identify low-altitude, low-speed, and small aerial targets, such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The 8.4-meter USV functions as a sensor-only platform, intended to pass target tracking data to other systems for engagement rather than engaging threats directly. It can operate independently or as part of a distributed network to extend surveillance perimeters without requiring additional crewed vessels. The craft features a maximum speed of 55 knots, a 600 kg payload capacity, and an endurance of up to 30 days.
