Kraken compliance systems disrupted by dusting attacks

The cryptocurrency exchange Kraken recently experienced a series of “dusting attacks” that disrupted its regulatory compliance systems. Between August 17 and August 24, the firm’s security systems identified approximately 12,000 unsolicited micro-deposits sent to the wallets of thousands of customers.

While the monetary value of these transactions was negligible—consisting of fractions of a cent or small dollar amounts—the technical impact was significant. The influx of these micro-transactions caused a temporary collapse in Kraken’s compliance monitoring systems. Intelligence firm Arkham Intelligence attributed the transactions to a wallet linked to the HTX platform (formerly Huobi) by cross-referencing addresses previously disclosed in HTX’s Proof of Reserves reports.
