Krakow police dismantle opioid ring involving anesthesiologist
Polish authorities have dismantled an organized criminal group involved in the widespread distribution of opioids and psychotropic medications. The investigation has linked the group's activities to the deaths of at least four young women in Krakow, with overdose incidents reported as far back as 2021.
A central figure in the operation was a 58-year-old anesthesiologist from Lower Silesia. According to investigators, the doctor issued bulk prescriptions for controlled substances without verifying patient medical histories or dosages. He reportedly earned at least 200,000 PLN by fulfilling these illegal requests, which were often coordinated by a 37-year-old woman.
So far, 17 individuals have been detained in connection with the network, which operated across several regions including Krakow, Bydgoszcz, Lublin, and Częstochowa. The group targeted vulnerable populations, including teenagers and individuals in mental health crises.
