Kraków religious leaders commemorate local church history and resilience
Religious leaders in Kraków recently presided over ceremonies commemorating the history and resilience of local Catholic communities.
In Nowa Huta, Archbishop Marek Jędraszewski participated in a Mass to bless commemorative plaques honoring the faithful and clergy who defended their faith during the communist era. The ceremony highlighted the historical struggle of residents to maintain religious life in a city originally designed by socialist authorities to be devoid of God. The event specifically recalled the defense of a cross in April 1960 and honored the role of figures such as St. John Paul II in the region's spiritual history.
In Wola Justowska, Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś consecrated a new church to mark the 75th anniversary of the parish of Our Lady Queen of Poland. The parish has a turbulent history, including being burned down in 1978 and again in 2002. The current masonry church, built between 2016 and 2020, was designed to reference the previous structures. During the Mass, Cardinal Ryś reflected on the community's history of sacrifice and perseverance.
