Kranenburg holds major commemoration for Operation Market Garden anniversary
A large-scale commemoration was held in Kranenburg, Germany, to honor war victims and mark the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden. The ceremony included a Holy Mass at St. Peter and Paul Church and a memorial service at the Rathaus monument.
The monument honors American paratroopers, including Technical Sergeant George T. Harrison and Corporal William H. Armstrong, who were captured and summarily executed by an SA man in September 1944. Recent identification of the soldiers has led to increased scale in these annual commemorations.
Historical accounts from the region also highlight the role of local churches and monasteries during the conflict. In areas like Groesbeek, churches served as lookout posts or field hospitals, while Franciscan convents provided refuge for hundreds of civilians amidst the fighting between German forces and the American 82nd Airborne Division.
