Maksimir stadium competition faces appeals and political scrutiny
The international architectural competition for the new Maksimir stadium in Zagreb has faced significant controversy following the selection of the Milan-based VG13 Architects Studio Associato. The winning design has drawn widespread criticism from fans and the public, primarily due to concerns regarding its functionality and the lack of connected stands.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković expressed personal dissatisfaction with the selected design and suggested investigating legal avenues to potentially cancel the tender and launch a new one. Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević noted that while the professional jury supported the decision, the city and the government must find a solution that satisfies both experts and the stadium's primary users, the fans.
Two formal appeals have been filed with the State Commission for Control of Public Procurement Procedures (DKOM). Mayor Tomašević indicated that all options remain open, but the city must wait for the legal appeal period to expire before making further decisions regarding the project's future.
