Kratom regulation debates intensify in Pennsylvania and New York

Legislators and community members in the Northeastern United States are debating the regulation and potential banning of kratom, a supplement derived from the Mitragyna speciosa tree. In Pennsylvania, pending legislation in both the House and Senate seeks to regulate the substance rather than criminalize it. Proposed measures include banning concentrated 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) and synthetic versions, prohibiting sales to individuals under 21, and requiring labels that warn of opioid-like effects.

In New York, families of deceased individuals are advocating for local bans. At a Rensselaer County Legislature forum, mothers shared testimonies regarding the fatal consequences of kratom consumption, noting that the substance is often sold in convenience stores with deceptive health claims. This follows a ban that recently went into effect in Albany County. Health officials have expressed concern over manufacturers isolating and concentrating 7-OH to create potent products like gummies and vapes, which can produce dangerous side effects.
