Kredarica Hut celebrates 130 years of mountain refuge service

The Kredarica Hut, Slovenia's highest mountain refuge located at 2,515 meters, is celebrating 130 years since its opening on August 10, 1896. The initiative to build the hut was proposed by priest Jakob Aljaž during the construction of the Aljaž Tower on Mount Triglav, emphasizing that the facility would be open to tourists of all nationalities.

Owned and managed by the Triglavski dom (Ljubljana-Matica Mountaineering Society), the hut hosts over 20,000 visitors annually and records approximately 8,000 overnight stays during the summer season. It features 300 seats across five dining areas and provides roughly 300 beds. The facility also houses a meteorological station and remains operational year-round, with meteorologists managing the site during the off-season.

To mark the anniversary, the Slovenian Mountaineering Museum in Mojstrana will host a lecture by Dragan Božič on August 28. Historian and alpinist Peter Mikša noted that the hut's establishment was a significant act in the Slovenian ‘struggle for the mountains’ at the end of the 19th century and has since become a central part of Slovenian alpinism history.
