Krefeld Pinguine lose DEL return match against Bremerhaven

The Krefeld Pinguine marked their return to the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) with a 1-3 home defeat against the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven. Playing in a sold-out Yayla-Arena, the promoted Krefeld side experienced an emotional homecoming after 1,633 days in the second division.

Bremerhaven secured the victory with goals from Christian Wejse and Miha Verlic in the second period, followed by a strike from Akito Hirose. Krefeld's lone goal was scored by Max Newton, marking the club's first DEL goal since April 2022.

The match featured a notable reunion for Krefeld coach Thomas Popiesch, who previously led Bremerhaven from 2016 to 2024. Despite the loss, the event was characterized by high fan engagement and large-scale choreography in support of the team's return to the top tier.
