Krefeld steam locomotive initiative seeks to prevent service shutdown

A local initiative is attempting to save the historic Schluff steam locomotive service, which operates between Krefeld-Hüls and St. Tönis. Stadtwerke Krefeld has announced plans to cease operations by the end of the year, citing high maintenance costs and the need for track renovations estimated at approximately 2.5 million euros.

To prevent the shutdown, a working group led by Franz Schmitz is proposing the creation of a private railway infrastructure company. This entity would take over the route and manage operations independently. The group suggests a phased renovation approach, focusing on the most critical sections of the track first to manage costs. Funding for this venture would likely rely on private investors and donations, supported by strong public interest evidenced by sold-out ticket sales.
