Kreis Mettmann faces budget challenges and urban development decisions
In the district of Mettmann, officials have presented the 2027 budget draft, highlighting significant financial challenges. District Administrator Bettina Warnecke called for fairer financing of municipal tasks, noting that while the district handles more than a quarter of public duties, it receives only approximately 15 percent of tax revenue. She specifically cited rising costs for integration assistance and criticized the structural underfunding affecting local authorities.
District Treasurer Christian Schölzel emphasized that the budget is heavily impacted by rising social expenditures, which account for nearly 70 percent of the increase in the district levy. He warned that without a moratorium on social welfare spending, the gap between revenue and expenditures may become unsustainable.
Simultaneously, in the city of Mettmann, the city council narrowly approved a development plan for the area west of Hasseler Straße. The decision allows for the construction of four multi-family houses south of Auf dem Pfennig and maintains options for a new supermarket and additional residential development. The vote followed intense debate and included a secret ballot regarding land-use plan changes.
