Kreis Viersen retires environmental official Rainer Röder

Rainer Röder has retired from the Kreis Viersen district administration after 41 years of service. He was officially honored by District Administrator Bennet Gielen on October 1.

Röder began his career in 1985 as a geology assessor and held various leadership roles, including head of the soil protection and contaminated sites department and director of the technical environmental protection office. In 2022, he was appointed as the department head for planning, construction, and the environment, as well as the first manager of the Kreis Viersen waste management operation (ABV).

During his tenure, Röder oversaw significant projects such as broadband expansion, climate change adaptation, and the realization of a recycling and logistics center. He was also instrumental in managing environmental solutions related to the Garzweiler open-cast lignite mine, specifically regarding water seepage to protect local wetlands. Nina Riezler is scheduled to succeed him on January 1.
