Kreis Viersen secures €3 million for urban renewal and climate‑resilient schoolyard projects

The state of North Rhine‑Westphalia allocated more than €3 million in 2026 under its Städtebauförderung programme to four projects in the Kreis Viersen – Brüggen, Tönisvorst, Viersen‑Süchteln and Nettetal. The funds will be used to modernise town centres, upgrade the Burg Brüggen site, develop a swimming‑pool area and cover planning costs for further investments.

At the same time, the NRW Ministry of Economy, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy announced two new climate‑adaptation funding schemes – “1000 cool schoolyards” and “1000 cool Kitas” – as part of a €2 billion climate package. Schools and kindergartens in the district, such as the Regenbogenschule in Kempen, can apply for measures like greening, de‑paving, shading and rain‑water retention to create cooler, more resilient learning environments.
