Russia allegedly intensifying sabotage campaign against NATO
U.S. intelligence services and European officials report that a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany in August was intended to be the start of an intensified Russian sabotage campaign targeting NATO member states.
According to reports citing the Wall Street Journal, Vladimir Putin allegedly ordered these covert operations. The attacks are believed to be carried out by the GRU’s Special Tasks Service (SSD), a unit formed in 2023 to conduct a “secret war” against Europe. Following the Leipzig incident, a Kremlin official reportedly informed Berlin through unofficial channels that such attacks would not be the last.
The escalation is reportedly driven by growing frustration in Moscow over the lack of progress in negotiations with Washington and the continued military support for Ukraine. European authorities have considered invoking Article 5 of the NATO treaty in response to such provocations, though the alliance focuses on managing these hybrid threats through intelligence and heightened security.
