Kretinga District Municipality debates independent audit of winter maintenance costs

The Kretinga District Municipality Council is deliberating whether independent auditors will be permitted to inspect the organization, implementation, and control of winter maintenance work in Kretinga city for the 2026 season.

Total funding for winter services has risen to approximately 990,000 euros, an increase from an initial 340,000 euros. This additional 650,000 euros was allocated by the Council despite reductions in funding for other areas, such as cemetery maintenance, social housing development, and local environmental projects. Critics have noted that while the municipality spent nearly one million euros on winter services without an official state of emergency, the Plungė district spent significantly less—approximately 410,000 euros—during a period when an emergency was officially declared due to heavy snowfall.
