Kretinga proposes unique boundary signs reflecting local identity

A new concept for unique city boundary signs in Kretinga has been presented to the public at the M. Valančius Public Library. Designed by Vakaris Bernotas, a professor at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, the proposal moves away from standard signage to incorporate elements reflecting the city’s identity, history, and spiritual heritage.

The design utilizes motifs of the cross and the sun, drawing inspiration from centuries of Lithuanian cross-making traditions and the Baltic Road of Crosses. The signs are proposed to be constructed from durable, weather-resistant Corten steel on granite bases.

One side of the signs will feature the name ‘Kretinga’ and the city’s coat of arms, which is notable for being the only one in Lithuania depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus. The reverse side will reference the city’s historical origins, marking the year 1253 when the town was mentioned as ‘Cretyn’. The concept also includes Franciscan symbols, such as the Tau cross and a stylized pair of birds.
