Indonesia prepares for arrival of first aircraft carrier KRI Gajah Mada

Indonesia is preparing to receive its first aircraft carrier, the former Italian vessel ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, which will be renamed KRI Gajah Mada. The ship is expected to arrive in Indonesia between September 15 and 20, 2026. Upon arrival, the vessel will first dock in Jakarta for an official handover ceremony involving the signing of grant documents.

Following the formalities in Jakarta, the carrier will proceed to its new home at the Teluk Ratai Naval Base in Lampung. Infrastructure work at the Lampung base is currently in the finishing stages and is expected to be fully operational by the end of September 2026.

The acquisition is intended to bolster Indonesia's maritime defense capabilities and reinvigorate its domestic defense industry. Lawmakers and defense officials have emphasized the importance of securing technology transfers during the handover to ensure Indonesian engineers and sailors can effectively operate and maintain the vessel. The ship is currently transiting from Italy, with planned stops in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka.
