Križevci Council Approves Controversial War Memorial Park

The town of Križevci in Croatia has launched a procurement process to build a memorial park featuring vintage military equipment from the 1940‑1970 period. The project, announced on 17 July 2026, allocates €60,000 for the first phase and will be placed on Franje Tuđmana Street in the town centre.

Council members are sharply divided. Pro‑memorial councillor Marko Katanović (SDP) defended the exhibit, saying it honors defenders of the Homeland War, while opposition members and local residents argue that heavy artillery and old tanks have no place in a central pedestrian area and would detract from planned amenities such as a planetarium, playgrounds or a skate park. Independent councillor Hrvoje Seleši criticized the plan, noting that “children should have a nicer future, not jump on Russian cannons from 1942.”
