Križevci initiative proposes separation from Koprivničko-križevačka County

An initiative has emerged in Križevci to separate the city from Koprivničko-križevačka County and join Zagreb County. The movement is driven by claims of systemic neglect and unequal development within the current county, with proponents arguing that Križevci is more economically and transport-wise connected to the Zagreb metropolitan area.

Ivan Majdak, a former president of the City Council, has suggested that a referendum could be launched to allow citizens to decide on the matter if political relations do not improve. He specifically cited the county's refusal to grant Križevci the authority to issue building permits—a power recently granted to the smaller town of Đurđevac—as a primary catalyst.

Mayor Tomislav Katanović noted that while the city naturally gravitates toward Zagreb, he does not currently view a formal separation as a priority, stating that the city has more pressing issues and that local administrative structures are a matter for the state level.

In response, County Prefect Tomislav Golubić dismissed the claims of neglect, asserting that Križevci has received significant funding, including a 9 million euro project for a health center. He characterized the separation talk as an attempt to gain political points.
