Krishna Shalby Hospital in Ahmedabad, India, has released promotional social media content featuring former Nigerian Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar following his knee replacement surgery. The video montage, which includes footage of Mr. Abubakar undergoing physical therapy, uses taglines such as ‘A milestone in international care’ and ‘Clinical Excellence Beyond Borders.’

The promotional material also features images of Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima. The hospital reported that Mr. Shettima visited the facility to meet with management and discuss Mr. Abubakar’s recovery, stating the visit reflects ‘growing trust in India’s healthcare.’

The use of the former leader’s medical journey for marketing has drawn criticism from Nigerian commentators. Activist Omoyele Sowore described the incident as a ‘tragic indictment of failed leadership,’ while lawyer Aloy Ejimakor called the advertisement a ‘diplomatic insult to Nigeria.’ The controversy has sparked discussions regarding medical tourism and the state of the Nigerian healthcare system.
