Kristi Rogers distributes gas gift cards in Detroit

Kristi Rogers, wife of Republican U.S. Senate nominee Mike Rogers, was observed distributing $10 gas gift cards to customers at a Freedom Fuel gas station in Detroit on October 14.

The incident occurred during a competitive Senate race between Rogers and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. While Michigan election code classifies providing items of value to induce voting as a misdemeanor, legal experts noted that such giveaways may be legal if they are offered to everyone without specific conditions or requirements to vote for a particular candidate.

Campaign finance experts indicated that the Rogers campaign would likely be required to disclose the expenditures under federal regulations. The Rogers campaign did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding whether any specific campaign messages were delivered alongside the gift cards.
