Sofia Court grants early release to Christian Nikolov
The Sofia City Court has granted conditional early release to Christian Nikolov, who is serving a nine-year sentence for the 2020 fatal car accident that killed journalist Milen Tsvetkov. Nikolov, who has served over five years of his sentence, was granted release based on the court's assessment that his behavior in prison demonstrated successful rehabilitation. During the hearing, Nikolov expressed remorse, noting his participation in prison work, language translation, and vocational training.
The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has announced its intention to appeal this decision before the Sofia Appellate Court. Prosecutors argue there is insufficient evidence to prove that Nikolov has truly reformed under the requirements of the Penal Code. While the court noted his lack of disciplinary infractions, the prosecution maintains that the decision does not re-evaluate the original public danger of the crime.
The victim's family has expressed profound grief, with Tsvetkov's former wife, Dana Nacheva, stating that the loss is irreparable. She emphasized a need for systemic changes regarding driving under the influence of narcotics and called for consistent application of the law.
