Kristijan Balov acquires Serbian citizenship to gain bonus player status

Bulgarian footballer Kristijan Balov has obtained Serbian citizenship only months after joining Crvena zvezda. The 20-year-old winger joined the club from Slavia Prague in a transfer valued at approximately 3 million euros.

By acquiring a Serbian passport, Balov gains ‘bonus player’ status in the Serbian SuperLiga. This administrative change allows the club more flexibility in squad selection, as he can now be registered as a domestic young player rather than a foreign import. This follows a similar pattern previously seen with player Nair Tiknizjan.

Despite his new citizenship, Balov remains eligible to play for the Bulgarian national team, having already made his debut for them. Crvena zvezda manager Albert Riera has emphasized the importance of young, motivated players in his tactical approach, though Balov has recently dealt with minor injury concerns.
