Kriva Palanka landfill fire partially localized after 20-hour battle
A major landfill fire near Kriva Palanka, North Macedonia, has been partially localized after more than 20 hours of continuous firefighting efforts. The blaze, which was first registered around 6:00 PM, spread significantly due to its scale and required extensive resources to manage.
Mayor Saško Mitovski reported that firefighting units from Kriva Palanka and the public enterprise 'Komunalec' worked alongside teams from the neighboring municipality of Rankovce and several private companies. In addition to water, firefighters utilized large quantities of earth to help contain the flames.
While the situation is gradually being brought under control, emergency teams and machinery remain on-site to continue burying the fire with soil. Authorities have warned residents about the unpleasant smell and smoke spreading through the area.
