Kırkağaç melon producers utilize vertical storage for winter supply

Following a record harvest of 30,000 tons across approximately 10,000 decares, producers in the Kırkağaç district of Manisa have begun storing Kırkağaç melons for winter consumption. The geographically indicated product is being preserved using a traditional vertical hanging method, where melons are tied to ropes and suspended from ceiling structures.

This vertical storage technique provides significant logistical advantages. According to local producer Apti Kayacık, the method allows for 35 to 40 tons of melon to be stored in a 100-square-meter area, compared to only 5 to 6 tons if laid on the ground. The system also improves air circulation, which helps maintain freshness through February and March.

Emin Özarı, President of the Kırkağaç Chamber of Agriculture, noted that the melon's thick skin and unique flavor are tied to the specific soil structure of the region. He highlighted the product's durability for transport and called upon the Aegean Exporters' Association to facilitate expansion into European markets.
