Kırıkkale Wildfire Sparked by Cigarette Butt Threatens Homes and Barns

A fire broke out near the Ahılı village’s Ömerli location in Kırıkkale, Turkey, after a discarded cigarette butt reportedly ignited dry grass. Strong winds caused the flames to spread quickly toward nearby houses and animal barns, endangering roughly 400 dönüm (about 10 ha) of vegetation.

Firefighters from the Kırıkkale Municipality Fire Department arrived on the scene and, together with a local farmer who helped using a shovel, managed to prevent the blaze from reaching the settlement. Hay bales were saved at the last moment, and the fire was extinguished before causing damage to homes or livestock structures. Village head Davut Doğan warned that similar incidents had occurred previously and urged greater caution when discarding cigarettes.
