Kırklareli implements underground drip irrigation to boost pasture productivity

A new project titled ‘Smart Irrigation Healthy Pasture’ is being implemented in Kırklareli to increase pasture productivity through underground drip irrigation systems. The initiative is a collaboration between the Kırklareli Atatürk Soil, Water and Agricultural Meteorology Research Institute and the Kırklareli Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry.

During a recent field day event, officials explained that the underground system delivers water directly to the plant roots, reducing surface evaporation to zero and allowing livestock grazing to continue during irrigation. Dr. Ozan Öztürk noted that the project utilizes drought-resistant plants, including Festuca arundinacea, English ryegrass, white clover, and dogtooth grass, with irrigation lines placed 30 centimeters below the surface.

Local authorities emphasized that while high costs may prevent widespread application across all pastures, the technology is essential for artificial meadow pastures to combat the effects of climate change and ensure sustainable water management.
