Kärnten launches AI pilot project to monitor water supply
The pilot project ‘WasserRadar Kärnten’ has been launched in Neuhaus, Austria, to improve water supply monitoring through artificial intelligence. By analyzing digital consumption data collected since 2021, the system aims to identify water losses, unusual consumption patterns, and potential supply shortages more rapidly than traditional manual meter reading.
Water official Marika Lagger-Pöllinger stated that while Carinthia generally has good water resources, regional shortages can occur during extended dry periods. The project combines municipal experience with AI to create water balances, consumption forecasts, and automatic warning systems. This allows providers to act proactively to protect drinking water and secure long-term supply.
In addition to optimizing utility operations, the project includes a planned citizen portal. This platform will allow residents to view their own water consumption, ongoing costs, and information regarding the status of the water supply, including warnings about potential shortages.
