Kroger reduces sales guidance amid US inflationary pressures

Kroger CEO Greg Foran has reduced the company’s annual sales guidance, citing increased consumer caution due to inflationary pressures. Foran noted that customers are becoming more selective, focusing on essential purchases as economic conditions tighten.

Rising diesel prices, which recently reached a record US$6 per gallon, are driving up logistics costs. Food manufacturer General Mills has indicated that imminent price increases are expected due to a 40 per cent surge in these costs. These inflationary trends have increased market expectations for the Federal Reserve to implement a 0.25 per cent interest rate hike next week.

Despite these economic challenges, the S&P 500 rose by 0.8 per cent, supported by robust earnings growth driven by the artificial intelligence boom. Investors appear to have priced in anticipated rate hikes, with long-term profit expectations remaining high.
