Kroger to close 60 stores and cut 1,000 jobs amid restructuring
Kroger, the American supermarket giant, is moving forward with a restructuring plan that includes closing 60 underperforming stores by the end of 2026. The company also announced the layoff of nearly 1,000 corporate employees.
This reorganization follows a definitive judicial block of a proposed US$ 25 billion merger with competitor Albertsons, which was halted by the United States courts in December 2025. The restructuring aims to simplify cost structures and focus on more promising markets across its approximately 2,800 operational units.
