Kroger to close 60 stores to focus on high-performing markets
Kroger has announced plans to close 60 supermarket locations by the end of the year as part of a strategic effort to focus on high-performing markets. The company revealed this contraction in its first-quarter earnings report, stating that the move is intended to provide a financial boost to improve the shopping experience at remaining stores.
To date, 39 locations across 15 US states have already closed. Kroger Chairman and interim CEO Ron Sargent noted that the company can no longer justify maintaining underperforming storefronts that do not deliver sustainable results. To mitigate the impact on staff, Kroger has pledged to offer employees at affected locations positions at nearby sister stores.
