Kroger tops grocery price study, edging out Walmart and others
A study commissioned by Restaurant Furniture Plus and reported by Southern Living compared the cost of 15 common store‑brand items across four major U.S. grocery retailers—Kroger, Walmart, Aldi and Albertsons. Kroger posted the lowest total basket price at $30.00, narrowly beating Walmart’s $30.95, while Aldi and Albertsons were higher at $33.15 and $35.58 respectively. Kroger offered the lowest price on ten of the fifteen items, leading in categories such as spaghetti, canned tomatoes, sugar and eggs.
Separately, a consumer analysis contrasted Walmart with New England‑based Market Basket, concluding that Market Basket generally provides cheaper prices overall. The report attributes Market Basket’s advantage to thin profit margins, minimal advertising, streamlined operations and aggressive sourcing, whereas Walmart relies on a broader selection and strong private‑label brands.
