Krokstadelva fire in Norway destroys 100+ homes

A major wildfire swept through the village of Krokstadelva in July 2026, destroying more than 100 homes and forcing the evacuation of over 400 residents. The blaze, described as the largest of its kind in modern Norwegian history, followed two other severe fires in recent years—Lærdal in 2014, which lost 40 houses, and Ålesund in May 2026, which required the evacuation of nearly 300 people.

Justice and Emergency Preparedness Minister highlighted the need for Norway to improve its readiness for such incidents, citing climate‑driven changes that increase fire risk. The Directorate for Civil Protection and Emergency Planning (DSB) has warned that fire‑and‑rescue services must adapt with new competencies, technology, and capacity. Experts warn that dry vegetation, dense timber housing, and increased tourism create a “powder‑keg” scenario that will strain emergency resources unless systemic upgrades are made.
