Krokstadelva Fire Sparks Calls for a National Fire Commission

A large blaze in the Krokstadelva area of Drammen municipality destroyed more than 100 homes. Police crime‑scene investigators are examining the site, with negligence cited as a possible cause. The Brannfaglige Fellesorganisasjon (BFO) is urging the creation of a permanent fire commission to probe major fires, evaluate fire‑safety measures, and recommend preventive actions, similar to Norway’s aviation accident board. The proposal echoes a six‑year‑old suggestion from Labour Party politician Lene Vågslid that was previously rejected by Parliament.

Tønsberg municipal director Frode Hestnes said the disaster should serve as a wake‑up call. He referenced recent fire‑safety upgrades in his own municipality, including sprinkler installations, and urged that lessons from Krokstadelva be used to improve building standards and emergency preparedness nationwide.
