Krpani wells contaminated with PFAS and heavy metals

PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ and heavy metals have been detected in wells in the Krpani settlement near Gospić, Croatia. The affected wells are located approximately 600 meters downstream from a site where hazardous waste has been disposed of for years.

Local residents expressed significant concern regarding the potential impact on human health, particularly for children, and the safety of livestock. There are fears that the contaminated groundwater flows into the Novčica river, potentially spreading the pollution through the Lika and Gacka river systems toward the coast and islands.

Local farmers and family farm (OPG) owners are facing economic uncertainty, fearing they can no longer safely sell meat, vegetables, or livestock products. Residents have voiced frustration toward state and government institutions, claiming a lack of communication and support regarding the contamination.
