Krste Misirkov's centennial death commemoration highlights burial hardships

Krste Petkov Misirkov died on 26 July 1926 in the Alexander Hospital (now the Internal Clinic of the Medical Faculty) in Sofia after six weeks of treatment for a suspected meningitis or encephalitis, later identified as a brain tumour. His wife, Ekaterina Misirkova, could not afford funeral costs and the couple were buried in a pauper’s section of the Sofia cemetery. Grandson Boris Misirkov, a filmmaker and photographer, has long spoken about his grandfather’s legacy and the unfulfilled attempts to repatriate Misirkov’s remains to Macedonia, a project that remains stalled.

The 100‑year anniversary of Misirkov’s death brings renewed attention to these personal hardships and the ongoing debate over the location of his final resting place.
