Krstovdan: Orthodox believers celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Orthodox Christians celebrate the autumn feast of Krstovdan, also known as the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, on September 27. The holiday commemorates the discovery of the True Cross by Empress Helena in Jerusalem in the 4th century and the subsequent return of the relic from Persia to Jerusalem in the 7th century.

Religious observances include strict fasting, often involving only bread, water, and grapes. While many religious holidays discourage housework, tradition dictates that homes should be thoroughly cleaned and organized on Krstovdan to prepare for the upcoming winter and ensure a productive year. Other customs include gathering blessed basil and observing meteorological signs, such as cloudy weather predicting a snowy winter.

The holiday serves as both a spiritual period of purification and a practical seasonal transition, marking the end of summer agricultural activities and the preparation for colder months.
