Kruithoorn asylum center delayed due to asbestos discovery

The development of the Kruithoorn asylum seeker center (azc) in 's-Hertogenbosch has been delayed following the discovery of asbestos-suspect material during preparatory work. While field research indicates the material is not present everywhere, allowing work to resume in certain areas with precautions, the overall completion date for the facility is now projected for the third quarter of 2027.

Due to this delay, current residents of the Hervensebaan emergency shelter may not be able to move to the new Kruithoorn center by the end of 2026 as originally planned. The municipality is currently investigating options with the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) to extend the use of the Hervensebaan location. Officials have stated that any extension of the emergency shelter will not impact the planned area development of De Vliert or scheduled housing construction.
