Kryvyi Rih drone strike kills 16 in shopping center attack

A Russian drone strike on a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih, central Ukraine, has killed at least 16 people and injured approximately 130 others. The attack, which occurred on Friday, August 21, 2026, involved a double-tap strike; a second drone hit the location roughly 30 minutes after the initial explosion, specifically targeting emergency responders on the scene.

The strike ignited a fire covering about 9,000 square meters. Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported that 29 people are in serious condition, including several children. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from seven other Ukrainian regions assisting in clearing the rubble. As of the latest reports, several individuals remain missing.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strike as a “cynical and despicable” terrorist act and vowed that Ukraine would respond. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also condemned the attacks during a communication with the Ukrainian president. A day of mourning has been declared across the Dnipropetrovsk region.
