FIFA calendar reform introduces extended three-week international break

FIFA has implemented a major reorganization of the international football calendar, resulting in an extended three-week international break. Starting from the 2026/27 season, the separate September and October windows have been merged into a single, consolidated period. This allows national teams to play up to four matches within approximately three weeks, including UEFA Nations League fixtures.

This change has drawn mixed reactions from club football. While the merger aims to reduce player fatigue from frequent travel and time zone changes, it disrupts the rhythm of domestic leagues like the Bundesliga. Some club coaches view the long hiatus as a negative aspect that interrupts competitive momentum, while others see it as a necessary period for recovery and mental reset.

During this extended window, club competitions such as LaLiga are paused, but other sports and tournaments, including women's Champions League and various handball championships, continue to provide coverage.
