Öksürük Baba tomb in Erzurum serves as a spiritual site

The historical Öksürük Baba tomb, located in the Yakutiye district of Erzurum, serves as a significant spiritual site for locals. Known colloquially as “Öksürük Baba” or “Tükürük Nene,” the site is frequently visited by individuals seeking relief from chronic coughs and respiratory ailments through prayer and traditional rituals.

Architecturally, the stone structure is believed to date back to the 13th century, reflecting both Abbasid and Seljuk styles. While the original inscription has been lost to history due to past conflicts, the tomb contains two or three graves featuring cornice-style frames characteristic of Seljuk architecture. One notable feature is the presence of the Ayet-el Kursi inscription on one of the tombstones.

Researcher Taner Özdemir emphasizes the tomb's importance to the city's cultural and spiritual identity, noting that visitors often perform specific rituals, such as circling the tomb three times, to seek healing.
