Kütahya City Hospital performs first pediatric cochlear implant surgery
Kütahya City Hospital has successfully performed a cochlear implant surgery, commonly referred to as a ‘bionic ear,’ on 2.5-year-old Beyza Nur Ceviz. This marks the first time such a procedure has been conducted on a child in this age group within the city.
Beyza Nur Ceviz, who failed newborn hearing screenings, received bilateral implants. The surgery was completed successfully, and the child is expected to begin the process of adjusting to sound once the devices are activated in approximately one month.
Nimet Sarıkaya, President of the Kütahya Association for the Hearing Impaired, noted that while cochlear implants were previously available for adults in the region, the necessary resources for pediatric patients were lacking. With support from local officials and hospital administration, the required equipment has been secured, allowing for the treatment and follow-up of children with hearing loss in Kütahya and the surrounding areas.
