Global study links social bonds to improved health
A global study involving over 200,000 adults across 22 countries has found a strong link between social connections and improved mental and physical health. The research, part of the Global Flourishing Study (GFS) and published in the Journal of Mental Health, was led by Dr. Veli Durmuş of Kütahya Health Sciences University in Türkiye.
Participants who reported higher satisfaction with friendships and close relationships also reported better overall health. While positive childhood family relationships were also associated with better wellbeing, their influence was found to be weaker than adult social ties. Dr. Durmuş noted that adult social environments can strengthen or modify the impact of earlier experiences.
Findings varied by geography, with respondents in Indonesia reporting the highest satisfaction with friendships, while those in Japan reported the lowest. The study suggests that public health strategies should incorporate social and emotional connections as vital components of overall health and disease prevention.
